In 2015, many public health practitioners from all over Zimbabwe made an effort to launch the Zimbabwe Public Health Association (ZiPHA).
The associations’ vision was the attainment of the highest possible standards of health for all Zimbabweans, committing to improving the health and living status of the people of Zimbabwe through the dedicated and active involvement of its members in all aspects of public health in Zimbabwe and through collaboration with stakeholders.
Regretfully, this endeavour never materialised as it predominantly represented medical doctors, thereby excluding other health professionals with training and interest in public health. The event was organized by the Zimbabwe College of Public Health Physicians, which is affiliated to the Zimbabwe Medical Association and is mostly composed of physicians who have received training in public health. However, this organisation primarily represents physicians, excluding other health professionals with expertise and interest in public health.
While multidisciplinary health care associations are crucial, unfortunately, one of Zimbabwe’s biggest weaknesses is the absence of such.
Professionals from a variety of disciplines, including epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy and management, political science, social and behavioral sciences, health education, medicine, nursing, mediaand more, are included in a multidisciplinary association when discussing public health. By being the preferred organization for government public health policies, research, consultation procedures and various public upstream initiatives, such an association would play a significant role in determining Zimbabwe’s public health trajectory.
The lack of urgency, advocacy and incentive for the creation of a multidisciplinary public health association may be influenced by this underrepresentation and unequal chance for inclusion.
However, 2023 saw another effort emanating in the launch of Public Health Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe (PHPAZ) was on Friday launched following a resolution from the Public Health Symposium held last year to influence agenda setting on public health priorities in the country.
While its fruits are yet to be seen, the association comprises of members from various fields such as environmental health, nutrition, law, pharmaceutical development, social science amongst other disciplines and intends to bond all stakeholders in the healthcare industry towards the common goal of improving health in the communities.
